Health Issues You Should Get Checked Before You Start Bodybuilding

If you are serious on wanting to embark on a bodybuilding program, then you really should visit a health expert to assess your current physical health.

This is especially important if you do have a current medical condition even if you think it won’t be a problem.

The chances are they won’t find any reason for you not to get fit, build muscle and improve your health!

However, they will check measurements like your family medical history, your weight, pulse rate, blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Depending on your medical history and current health, your doctor may send a blood sample away to test for specific conditions.

Checking Your Pulse

A low pulse rate is a good indicator of your current physical fitness. It means your heart is strong and needs to pump less in order to send blood and oxygen around your body.

The average adult should have a pulse rate between 60 to 80 beats per minute. Anything higher or lower than this may need investigating.

Checking Your Blood Pressure Levels

This is measured against the pressure of your blood pumping around your arteries. The reading depends upon how strong your heart is pumping, as well as the volume and thickness of your blood. It also depends on the elasticity of the arterial walls.

A healthy adult should record a blood pressure level of no greater than 120/80mmHg. To be diagnosed with high blood pressure, you will need to consistently be above 140/90mmHg. At this level you are more likely to be at risk from cardiovascular disease.

It is important to get your blood pressure level checked by your doctor or medical expert because quite often there are no physical signs that you actually have high blood pressure.

Controlling High Blood Pressure

If you are diagnosed with high blood pressure, there are plenty of lifestyle changes you can make to rectify it, including exercising more, losing weight and consuming less salt and alcohol.

Sometimes lifestyle changes are not enough and medication may be needed to lower blood pressure levels. Either way, a check up to ascertain your current levels will let you know.

Ready to Start

Once you’ve had a check-up by a medical expert you may need to tailor your bodybuilding routine slightly. But even if you have some medical conditions that need to be monitored, the chances are, you will still be given the green light to start a bodybuilding lifestyle.

This is because bodybuilding incorporates a health-promoting lifestyle that can only benefit your overall health.

Now that you’ve had your check-up, it’s time to start your new life and to build a great looking body!
